Final Submission

Image
The following is my final submission for Get Schooled; A Student's Guide to Surviving the College Application Process. This experience has presented challenges that have opened my eyes to the immensely impressive industry that is the magazine business. This finalized version of the cover of Get Schooled includes all of the same elements from my quarter three submission. It has the burgundy color scheme that has grown to be the main recognizable part of Get Schooled, along with the image of the Harvard boathouse that relates in color. The captions throughout the cover are distributed so that there is still a vision of the sky, showing that "the sky is the limit" and representing further the point of my magazine. However, there is not enough empty space that it makes my cover appear empty or insufficient. The cover turned out to be perfect in the way that it portrays my theme while still maintaining a visually appealing look and feel. After much revision throughout m...

3rd Quarter Submission Feedback

My third quarter submission was regarded as very professional looking, which is exactly the image that I desired. On top of this positive feedback, the addition of pictures to my table of contents also gained a positive reaction, as opposed to the table of contents that at first was entirely colorless, and then was covered in only three photos. The updated version of this part of my magazine has improved immensely, as my cover did with the updated color scheme and subtitles that are in new locations. With an overall positive response to my updated cover and table of contents, I have determined that I do not have any changes to make to either part of my magazine. My two-page article wasn't updated from me second quarter submission because the color scheme still matches my cover and table of contents, therefore there is no need to update it. My feedback also included beneficial results regarding my two-page article and how the improvement of the original boring example really made my...

Third Quarter Submission

Image
This updated cover includes just two small adaptions,  including the movement of the title and subtitle back to the top left corner, as opposed to the center, where I had moved it for my post entitled "Updated Cover." I determined that it was the best decision to keep the original location, where it is still blatant to any viewer, although it does not look as if it is an ordinary magazine. Hopefully, by having my title in a somewhat abnormal and unexpected place, attention will be drawn to Get Schooled. I also moved, once again, the "Application Season Issue" subtitle. This time, I moved it closer to my white text that describes the content of my magazine in order to draw all attention, besides the title and focal point of my photo, down to the bridge. I felt my cover text was too spread out and busy when I included that line of text in the water, or in the top left corner. These are two changes that perfect the neat, appealing, and professional cover of my mag...

Creative Critical Reflection: Technology Integration

This product was created and researched entirely online, including the use of Blogger to outline my process, as well as entirely online research into other magazines and products that allowed me to discover further how companies like Conde Nast create such an immense and diverse amount of products that have and will continue to develop the magazine industry. My product is in part based off of the clever and clearly successful business plan and distribution model created by Conde Nast, especially involving their use of online websites and social media to further advertise and showcase their products to consumers. By using a new, up to date, and model that appeals to younger consumers, online magazine developments have been hugely successful regarding the recent changes in technological integration into the magazine industry. Without this new turn of events, the print magazine industry would be failing, but with the integration of online magazine production and distribution, the industry...

Creative Critical Reflection: Production Skills

My production skills improved thoroughly throughout the process of creating Get Schooled. I was able to conduct ample research that allowed me to realize to what extent a magazine must be planned and executed in order to create a successful product. Not only is creating a well organized and visually appealing product necessary, but advertising well and appealing to a specific audience without being too direct as to who should be buying your product is an intriguing challenge to work your way through and overcome. In the end, it became clear to me that all magazines that have become household names have been through lots of processes that determined the best way to present, advertise, and distribute their products. Online media creates new complications, and by researching magazines such as WIRED has enabled me to realize how important it is to compete not only with those products that are delivered door to door every day, but also those seemingly less threatening, but realistically mor...

Creative Critical Reflection: Audience Engagement and Media

My magazine is very reader-focused. The consumers of my product are the most important part of my business model, so by keeping their wants and desires in mind throughout the creation of Get Schooled, I have been able to create a final product that really expresses what my audience would want to engage with. I include a variety of articles and interviews that appeal to a wide range of students, but is also very personalized to a very specific group of students-the overachievers who want to go to college and are willing to buy a magazine about the application process because that is how devoted they are to a higher education. Engaging with my audience is one of the key elements of what makes my product so user-friendly and exciting for those who are passionate about college and their futures. My online magazine product will also be very user friendly and interactive. I will have a website similar to TIME, with individual articles that have been both included and not included in my print...
